Happy New Year!  As traders ride the Santa Claus rally into next week, will they receive the hard awakening of the traders coming back from their holiday.  There is certainly reason to be optimistic about the short term prognosis for the major indices.  For the first time since who know when, all three market have moved above the 50 Moving Average.  In addition, the NASDAQ and the S&P 500 moved above the consolidation range they have been in for months.  Yet, one key factor was missing from this move - Volume.  We all know volume equals conviction.

So as we resume trading with the traders ready to enter the market, what will be the sentiment to start off 2009.  We have the December Jobs reports looming on Friday.  We also have the reality of the monthly charts reminding up we are still in a downtrend.  How should we play Monday’s session?

We have another holiday shortened trading week. The volume will continue to be light which can lead to volatile moves in the stock market. Still, a couple sectors did catch my eye as I prepare for tomorrow’s trading session.

We could be seeing the beginning of a sentiment change for traders in the stock market.  We had yet another week of bad news reports; however, the market was able to hang on and not fall back to October/November lows.  From job cuts, earnings warnings and a decline in November Retail sales #’s, the economy continues to show serious signs of weakness.  The market was able to digest these releases and continue to move up and not to give back the majority of the gains.   Even after the huge gap down after the senate failed to pass their version of the auto bailout bill.  The market was able to fight its way higher to end the week unchanged.

Now, this move on Friday was based on the assumption that the government will not let the auto industry fail.  There are several sectors that may see a push if the bailout finally goes through (steel, metals, manufacturing, etc.).  Even with the newfound resiliance to stand in the face of negative news, the has yet to find the catalyst to get above the 50 moving averages.  It has proven to be strong resistance for all three major indexes.  What’s in store for this week?

Yet another rocky ride for the stock market last week. When we got together last week, the emphasis was placed on setting a higher low/high. Immediately on Monday, the bears took control off the negative sentiment of the ISM Index which came in at 36. The ISM Index is a measurement for manufacturing. Any reading under 50 is considered to show the sector is contracting. This was the lowest reading in decades. The higher low was looking to be in jeopardy. However, the bulls only allowed the market to be down 1 day.

Although the bears tried to push the market below to close of Monday, each day the bulls stepped in and push the market higher. There is no better example than that of Friday. The market once again was given horrible economic data. Nonfarm payroll jobs were cut by over 530,000 in the month on November. In addition, unemployment rose to 6.7%. The market did fall for the first hour all the way to Monday’s close, but then immediately reversed and closed higher by over 200 points. The higher low is in place and now let’s go for that higher high. Can we do it?

After the week we just had, I heard several analysts on tv state that the stock market bulls are back baby!  Before we just on that train, let’s take a moment to assess the week that was.   Over the previous the weekend, the Fed decided to step in and bailout Citigroup.  The guaranteed over 300 billion dollars in assets and invested another 20 Billions into the company.  And yes, many of the other financial companies may be looking for that same sweet deal.  In addition, we had confirmation of the new members of president-elect’s economic team.  In fact, it seemed like everyday last week there was a conference announcing a new member.

What really makes me feel like the bulls may be ready to step up their game is that among more negative economic news the market continued to rally.  The market has now rallied 5 consecutive sessions.  And yes, a pullback is certainly due.  But even with the geopolitical turmoil in India, the market continued to rally.  Finally, every bailout attempt by the government has been crushed by the bears.  Yet, last week we remained strong.  So, as the rest of the traders who took last week off assess the environment and determine their next moves, what will be in store for the stock market?
